A Life In Movies.

A LIFE IN MOVIES

So it came to my attention that there's this awesome little blogathon created by Fandango Groovers going down called "A Life In Movies". We're supposed to post May 8th, but I got too excited (that's what he said). The premise is to start with the year you're born, and list your favorite movie of every year up to the present. It's a good way to find out everyone's age make a list of a handful of your favorite movies, but I kinda already did that. So I don't risk completely repeating myself, like the maverick I am, I decided to switch it up a bit. Instead of listing my all time favorites (i.e., movies I respect and admire for their badassitry and consider great works of art), I'm going to list my all time guilty pleasures (i.e., generally big budget fluff movies that are like crack to me and I couldn't stop watching if I tried). Without further ado...

1989. Weekend At Bernies. My go-to movie whenever I had to stay home from school sick. I couldn't tell you how many times I've seen Larry and Richard drag that corpse around. It may account for my sick sense of humor.

1990. Goodfellas. Just a genius movie, no bones about it.

1991. The Silence Of The Lambs. I want to make sweet, sweet love to Jodie Foster's husky voice. Well, Jodie Foster period, but I'll take her voice, too.

Pierce Brosnan, tool of the year.
1992. The Lawnmower Man. Alright. Disclaimer. I hate this movie. It is ridiculous in ways I can't wrap my head around, and I've seen some fucked up shit. However, it's just way too much fun to watch at 3 AM with a room full of friends and rip into.

1993. Jurassic Park. Never gets old. Ever. Ever. DINOSAURS.

1994. Pulp Fiction. My favorite movie of all time. Though I recently watched it high and got a whole different experience from it. Just goes to show you can always learn something new about those movies you know by heart.

1995. Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. Another childhood favorite. I basically grew up watching Jim Carrey talk out of his ass.

1996. From Dusk Till Dawn. This one taught me a great life lesson: kill the vampires first, cry over your fallen comrades later.

You will not remember this movie.
1997. Men In Black. This one put Will Smith on the map for me. It's just a classic.

1998. Rush Hour. I know, kill me. But it was my first Jackie Chan, and while it's hardly his best work (if anything, it's probably his worst), it made me fall for him so it has a special place in my heart.

1999. The Mummy. I bet you thought I was going to say The Matrix? Yeah, so did I. But the thing is, as dear as that movie is to me, The Mummy brings up some serious nostalgia I can't deny.

2000. Gladiator. I saw this back when I knew Joaquin Phoenix as "that dude with the weird lip". Still, it's just a solid movie.

2001. The Lord Of The Rings. C'mon. I know you can't listen to the theme song without feeling your heart swell with nerdy joy.

Say "homicide".
2002. Road To Perdition. So you know how I just said Pulp Fiction was my all time favorite? This is a close fucking second. It helped that I saw it during the period of my life when I refused to remember actors names, so I was totally blind to how many serious stars are in this movie and got to simply enjoy the pure cinematic badassness of the story and the characters.

2003. Kill Bill Vol. 1. What can I say? The Bride is the shit.

2004. Dawn Of The Dead. I'll probably get some slack for this one, what with remakes always being crap and all. But if you forget that it's a remake, it's just a fun fucking movie. Mainly thanks to this guy.

Who knew her pretty face could scream so well?
2005. The Skeleton Key. New Orleans, voodoo, Kate Hudson's ass, and old fashioned suspense. Yes, please.

2006. The Departed. Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe fuck yourself.

2007. 300. Because THIS. IS. SPARTA.

2008. Rocknrolla. Gay gangsters, drug wastelands, and everything dirty shoved under the carpet of London. Is there anything better?

Nazi killing BAMF.
2009. Inglorious Basterds. Yeah, I know. Another Tarantino take over.

2010. Inception. Because it's hard to beat the hamster wheel fight.

2011. Hanna. I would list all the ways this movie rocks, but I'm too busy being addicted to The Chemical Brothers.

  1. Love the spin you put on this! Awesome list, I admit that there a few on here that I truly enjoyed as well *ahem/cough* THE MUMMY...huh? what?

  2. Oh, I love every movie on this list as though they were my children. Even if some of them are crap. But some are classics, and The Mummy is without a doubt a classic! It's just so reminiscent of the old fashioned adventure movies, and it's fucking epic. End of story.

  3. Yes! I totally have THE MUMMY for my 1999 pick as well! And you know, I still haven't seen Weekend at Bernie's, but it's referenced all the time so I should probably get on that.

  4. Love this list! I used to smoke funny things when watching Weekend at Bernie's. It seriously cracks me up sober or otherwise.

Road to Perdition and Goodfellas are my two favorite, favorite gangster movies. I can't drive past the old Florence Hotel here without having the urge to shoot a Tommy gun.

The Mummy is one hellagood adventure flick. I watch it every chance I get.

  5. @ Alex--I'm glad everyone's approving of my Mummy choice! It's just plain epic. And it's hilarious. I'm going to try to not force Weekend at Bernies on you because I attempted to do that with another friend and she now refuses to see the movie just because I pushed it on her so hard. But it's a good movie when you don't want anything serious and you're looking for some laughs.

@ Melissa--Dude. That will be my next great adventure. I think Weekend at Bernie's would be hilarious high. Sober it's hilarious too, but. I approve.

HAHA! Yeah, somehow I don't think old Florence would appreciate that very much. But I agree with you, they're SO fucking epic. I really have to rewatch Road to Perdition again, I watched it over and over for a while there and then stopped. But it's been itching me, so I'll have to get on that.

The Mummy and Jurassic Park are kind of my "go-to" adventure flicks. They never get old.

  6. THE MUMMY still is one of the best modern classic. In 20 or 30 years it will be one of those films we shall remember fondly from our youth, a film made of dreams and joy in every possible scene. Stephen Sommers is one of the best directors out there when it comes to classic fun films.

  7. I disapprove of your Mummy choice..but that's about all. Well, the term "guilty pleasure" seems really wrong for a list with so many classics. How about "comfort food?"

Anyway, The Mummy. I don't hate it, in fact it's really watchable. But I have guilt-by-association issues with it; namely, that it's guilty of being associated with Raiders, which is about 12,000 times better. And it's sequels blow.

Skeleton Key worth checking out? It's got Peter Saarsgard in it if I recall, and that dude rocks.

You're gonna see a lot of the same movies on my list...

  8. I hate The Mummy, other than that solid list. Thanks for taking part.

  9. Cool choices, we have two in common, TLOTR and Pulp Fiction.

I don't know how any one could choose anything else than Pulp Fiction for 94 really, such a brilliant film...

Road to Perdition is one I really must see sometime.

  10. Jurassic Park, my favorite movie theater experience to this day! Glad to see Gladiator as well, haven't anyone else with it so far. Nice list :)

  11. Nice take on things. There are a lot of fun movies on this list and we have several in common. Good work!

  12. @ Dezmond--I've got to agree with you there! It was such a fun take on old fashioned adventure movies, with a bit of a modern spin. Will not get old to me.

@ Fletch--Each to his own! And good point...comfort food is definitely more of what I was going for. They're really my version of a pint of Ben and Jerrys.

I haven't actually seen Raiders, but now I have to see it! I know what you mean by guilt-by-association, I definitely do that to a bunch of movies.

And I recommend Skeleton Key, it's got that great old fashioned built up of suspense instead of the flashy epileptic-fit ghosts popping out at you. Plus, like you, I just love Saarsgard. I'm looking forward to checking out your list!

@ Andy--That seems to be the point of contention for many! Thanks for bringing the blogathon to light, it was a blast to take part in!

  13. @ Jack L--I agree! Anyone who doesn't chose Pulp Fiction I might have to second guess. It's just such an epic movie.

And I highly recommend Road to Perdition, I've actually been meaning to rewatch it. By far one of my favorite movies of all time, next to Pulp Ficiton.

@ Castor--Thanks, homie! Jurassic Park is fucking epic. End of story. I would have loved to see that on the big screen.

And I can't help it, Gladiator is a fun one. I've seen it enough times to really enjoy it.

@ Dan--I'm glad you like it! I'll definitely have to check your list out, it's always a good sign when peeps have movies in common.

  14. Ooh, "The Skeleton Key" ... haven't seen that on anyone's list so far, but it's a good one. Scared the bejeezus out of me, and it's one of maybe three movies where I did not totally loathe Kate Hudson. Nice picks.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thanks! I've got to agree with you there, she really surprised me with that one. It's definitely a good movie, and rekindled my faith in good old fashioned suspense. Plus, I just fucking love New Orleans horror.

  16. I think that Pulp Fiction would be pretty fucked up stoned.

    Good list though!

And I totally agree with Jurassic Park. That shit never gets old. The bathroom scene will forever make me laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thanks! I've seen that movie so many times I can quote it, but I definitely saw it in a completely different time that night.

Jurassic Park is a BAMF. That's all there is to it. It's the one movie that really gets better every time I watch it--bathroom scene included.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The general thing is, that whatever film you watch stoned, it has a whole new perspective.

I heard The Fountain is a whole different film when watched stoned. This needs to be tested.

And yes! Jurassic Park is a BAMF. I can totally agree with it getting better the more you watch it. It is also a film that whenever it is on TV, no matter the million times I have seen it, I will ALWAYS watch it.

Actually, come to think of it, I don't even think I own it on DVD. I used to have the first and second one on VHS, but I have no idea where they went...this needs to be corrected. (And yes, I am one of those who liked the 2nd one. The 3rd was a pile of shit though.)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Word to that. The Fountain? That sounds like one that looks strange, sober or not. So far, my favorite stoned movie has been I Heart Huckabees. Severe WTF moments.

LMAO! I don't own Jurassic Park either, which SHOULD be a travesty...but they air it on TV so often and all my friends own it, so it's one of those movies that's always easy to get your hands on.

I'm with you there, I actually liked the second one too. C'mon, the scene where they fall on the glass window hanging off a cliff? Fucking scary! Plus, it's the only movie I like Vince Vaughn in, besides Dodgeball.

  22. Everyone likes to watch movies, but when you're not taking care of your personal movie database, you're probably not getting the most of your solarmovies.co collection. No matter what your interest in movies might be, you need to make sure that you're managing your personal movie database as best you can. Even though this might sound like a lot of work, it's not. When you begin to look at how you can wrangle your movies, you'll notice you're getting more out of your entertainment collection than you ever did before.

  24. I can think of a 100 movies based on the theme of romance and dating. But I had my picks when it came to zeroing on the best ones of the lot. But I decided to go one step further, did a survey of sorts through free online dating websites and dating communities on social networking sites and picked three popular movies for my "Top Three Dating Movies" list. Each of them is dating themed movies, but with a certain twist that sets them apart from the romance regulars. https://freenetflixacc2019.weebly.com/

I think the problem with this movie is that a lot people will pass this off as your average stoner comedy, which technically it is, but it is actually a lot more than that, and I think the problem with this movie is that most people didn't really 'get it'. film streaming
