BAMF Of The Week: Kevin Smith

KEVIN SMITH
Because no one does excessive cursing, stoner humor, and long commentaries that leave the mark of a good dick slap on society like Kevin Smith. From creating the unforgettable duo Jay and Silent Bob to the retelling of the apocalypse in Dogma (1999) to giving Ben Affleck a career, Kevin Smith has really proved just how badass he is again and again. And just when you think it couldn't get any better, his new film coming out in March, Red State (2011), the horror film based off the gay-bashing Westboro Baptist Church, gives us a whole new and exciting side of Kevin Smith. Indeed, he is really the gift that just keeps giving.

Personal Quote: "There's something to be said for failing. It's not the failure you feel, it's the failure that people project when something disappoints. You're back to ground zero, where there's no expectations, and that's where I like to be. People like to set the bar high. I like to put the bar on the ground and barely step over it. I like to keep the expectations really low. After something like 'Mallrats' or 'Jersey Girl,' the expectations are in the toilet. People are like, 'He's over, he's done.' So it's easier to be, like, 'Ta-da, I'm not.' It's a much more comfortable place to work from. When you have an escalating career, and every time you have to outdo yourself, I couldn't handle that kind of pressure. But having to outdo 'Jersey Girl'? Not very difficult."

Best Films: Clerks (1994) for still being extraordinary even as his first movie on a penny budget, Dogma (1999) for its complete and utterly crazy, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) for Jay and Silent Bob, and Clerks II (2006), just for giving the world pillow pants.

Best Moment: Star Wars PWNS Lord Of The Rings. Forever.

  2. I know! Kevin Smith is basically the man. End of story. And that SW/LOTR scene never, ever fails to get me cracking up. Always a pleasure to spread the Kevin Smith love!

  3. Another great choice. That quote is fantastic—"having to outdo 'Jersey Girl.' Not very difficult."

What I love about Kevin Smith is his unfettered approach towards filmmaking. He tells you what's on his mind free of censorship. Many of his films have been cult classics and he still continues to remain relevant.

I love the marketing strategy he is using for his new film, Red State. He has forsaken the studio route (to save tons of $) and will promote the film through a grass roots campaign. Genius!

  4. I agree with you completely! I think he's really one of the only men who's made it bit while not censoring himself one single little bit. And I don't even think it's an act he does. He really just seems that genuine. And he definitely has too much fun being Kevin Smith.

And Red State really does look brilliant. I didn't know that about the grass roots bit, that's fantastic! For someone who taps into the stoner humor easily, he's got a good head on his shoulders!

  6. Can't wait to see the new film. I think his quality has subsided of late - Zack and Miri wasn't very good even though I liked bits but since he gaves the world View Askew you've got to forgive him. Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy are great films! And his commentaries - especially the one for Mallrats, are so funny!

  7. MORGIE! An epic tribute to Kevin Smith! He really is amazing. I think you and I need to watch Clerks II together soon. Overall it wasn't as amazingly done as the first one, but I just can't over how outrageous and amazing and fantastic anything to do with Elias and Randall is. I haven't heard pillow pants spoken aloud in way too long.

EEEE! I didn't know he was coming out with a new movie! Do you know when in March it's coming out? If its over my spring break we HAVE to go!

  9. @ Dan--I've got to agree with you--Zack and Miri was cute, but it's nothing that will go down in history. I actually haven't really spent much time checking out his commentaries, but now I'm intrigued...I really have to get on that!

@ Fio--FIGGY! We SO need to rewatch Clerks. Pronto. There is always a good reason to rewatch Clerks. Randall is the best thing ever. There will never be a character that can so bitingly insult humanity quite like he can. And we definitely must see!!!

@ Dempsey Sanders--His humor is epic. It's completely and utterly unapologetic, and even if the people who don't find him funny have to give him kuddos for that.
